Level Shoulders
If your going to use a sand wedge for chipping like the touring pros do, make sure your shoulders are level to the ground. Many players move the ball back in their stance and shift their weight left, but they tilt the shoulders away from the target. That causes the low point of the arc to be behind the ball and results in a fat shot. Set your shoulders level, your eyes looking at the front of the ball, and keep your head slightly ahead of it. That moves the low point of the arc forward for solid contact.

Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee Joins Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America
CUSCOWILLA GOLF RESORT ON LAKE OCONEE
JOINS
PRESTIGIOUS INNKEEPING ASSOCIATION
The Cuscowilla Golf Resort on Lake Oconee, located in Eatonton, GA, was recently honored by admittance into Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America, the premier innkeeping association in the United States and Canada. Out of the thousands of inns in North America, only an elite few will be invited to join Select Registry this year. The Cuscowilla Golf Resort on Lake Oconee joins more than 375 other exceptional properties that are already members of the Association.
Founded in 1972 as the Independent Innkeepers’ Association by Norman Simpson, “the Father of Country Inn travel in America,” Select Registry is an offshoot of Simpson’s popular and pioneering book, Country Inns and Back Roads. The name and logo of the organization were changed several years ago to reflect the group’s approach to marketing its selective and distinguished member properties. Originally established in the Berkshire area of New England, the nonprofit organization is now headquartered in historic Marshall, Michigan. Member inns must meet the rigorous standards of a Quality Assurance program, and represent the most prestigious establishments of their type.
A marketing association, Select Registry partners with other brands and organizations—such as BMW, Karen Brown’s Guides, DiRoNA, UK Tour Operator Select Vacations, and Ontario’s Finest Inns to name a few—to promote its members to target audiences. Its celebrated guidebook—now in its 21st Edition—is distributed each year to nearly 400,000 guests throughout North America. The organization also maintains a critically-acclaimed website, supervises gift certificate and loyalty programs, and organizes promotions for its members.
The Cuscowilla Golf Resort on Lake Oconee exemplifies the high quality and service championed by this Association,” says Select Registry Membership Director Carol Riggs. “Select Registry assures the traveler that each of its inns is regularly inspected—anonymously and with an overnight inspection that measures the quality of hospitality, as well as the physical plant. Our members share a high standard of excellence, and each of our country inns, luxury B&Bs, and unique small hotels has its own distinctive character.”
The owners of the Cuscowilla Golf Resort on Lake Oconee are Heinz Nathe, Pete Bailey and Rolf Witt.
Highly ranked and regarded as #1 “Best Course You Can Play, Georgia” by Golf
Week 2010 the Ben Crenshaw/Bill Coore designed golf course winds through rolling meadows and valleys of pine. Enjoy a tranquil and peaceful round of golf while walking this exceptional natural course with one of our well trained caddies, then settle in for dinner in the Golf House Grill. Cuscowilla is ideally nestled in the middle of Georgia’s Lake Country just 70 miles east of Atlanta on beautiful Lake Oconee, the second largest lake in Georgia. Award winning golf, water activities, boat rental, biking, and tennis are just a few of the amenities that you can enjoy. STANDING OUT IN A CROWDED INDUSTRY
According to recent surveys, country inns, small hotels and B&Bs are more popular than ever. One online bed and breakfast web site identifies over 27,000 such properties in the U.S. and Canada. Reports have surfaced—including a recent New York Times article—that the industry has developed problems with quality control, pricing, and misrepresentation. “The field is becoming saturated,” states Riggs, “which makes being selected for this prestigious organization so important to our members. It sets the Inn apart in the public’s mind. Our standards are very high for member inns, making for outstanding travel experiences for the general public.”

Cuscowilla opens New Golf Training Center and Club Lounge
Eatonton, GA – April 26th 2010 – Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee announces today the opening of their new Golf Training Center and Club Lounge, much to the joy of all their property owners, members and resort guests.
The 2,200 square foot building is located on the back of the driving range and hosts 6 open hitting bays for year round all weather golf practice, as well as an indoor teaching area complete with state of the art cameras and computer software programs for swing analysis and a Club Lounge with guests’ amenities and an open stone fireplace.
Cuscowilla’s CEO, Andrew Ward told us that “we are very proud of our latest addition to our golf community. We have taken all of the elements already used in our Golf Club House building and charming Golf and Lake Cottages to ensure this facility blends in with the natural surroundings of Cuscowilla. Andy Craine our in-house Landscape designer with his team have completed a great landscape installation to ensure, especially once fully established, that this building stands the test of time and looks like it has been there for many years. We are very excited to have Lynn Blake, from Lynn Blake Golf join our Teaching Center, who along with Jarrod Clark and his Assistant Pro’s now have a year round facility to share their knowledge and skills with all of our golfers to assist them in mastering their game”.
Cuscowilla’s Head Golf Professional Jarrod Clark explains, “This is an exciting time for Cuscowilla, our members, and guests. This is an amenity that I always felt we were lacking, compared to other great golf facilities around the world. Those days are over now! We now have state-of-the-art video swing analysis, and the ability to teach in adverse weather and year round.”
Along with Cuscowilla’s Head Pro, and the rest of his Golf Team, Lynn Blake will be teaching at the new learning center. Having taught more than a dozen PGA Tour players, Blake is an experienced teacher in the sport of golf and he looks forward to joining the Cuscowilla Golf Team to help Cuscowilla property owners, members and resort guests perfect the game of golf.
Lynn explained “from the beginning, we had a dream: To create a world-class teaching facility staffed by world-class instructors on a world-class golf course. I am excited, humbled and challenged by our mission and can hardly wait to welcome each of you to our new learning center and onto the cutting edge of golf instruction”. Blake went on to explain that “My system – and it is a system, not a method -- is unique because it is based on alignments, not positions. Those alignments are based on geometrical relationships and the laws of force and motion, not on ‘expert’ opinion. They are also simple and easy to see and learn. The problem with Position Golf – as opposed to Alignment Golf -- is that it is possible to execute a prescribed position perfectly, yet still miss the ball. Each of the Three Zones – body, arms and hands – have definite assignments and alignments to execute. The end result of our training is a coordinated and aligned golf stroke that the ball respects. For our students, that means improved ball striking, lower scores and more enjoyment of the game”.
A Community Club Lounge was also added to the building. It features an area for socializing, including a large stone fireplace and seating area with wooden floors. The room was designed for cigar smoking and card playing, with added ventilation, and also as a quiet room for property owners to enjoy a sports event or simply to read a favorite book. The building was designed and built by Pilot Home Builders of Lake Oconee.
Ward was also very complementary about Pilot Home Builders stating “it’s great to do projects with partners and companies you trust and respect. Doug and Michelle Tumlin along with their superb staff did an awesome job for us on our Teaching Center”.
“It was a real honor to be asked to help design and build this new addition to Cuscowilla, which is a community where Pilot Builders has built many custom homes”. stated Doug Tumlin, Partner of the local Home Builder. He went on to explain that “Our own in-house designer, Ali Crumb, worked meticulously with the Cuscowilla Management Team to bring this design together, and our construction team opened the complex on time and on budget!”.

Golf Tip of the Week
15-70 Yard Bunker Shots
A common mistake among amateurs is to use a sand wedge for long bunker shots. These shots are much easier when you choose your shorts irons from a pitching wedge to an 8iron. You hit the shot just like a greenside bunker shot. Just remember to hit behind the ball with authority. Be aggressive and allow for more roll. Keep your angle of attack steep. Practice this for a while then start to use the shot on the course. It will save you strokes.
