Golf Tip of the Week

For A Soft Pitch

If you were tossing a ball to a child, you would hold a ball lightly and swing the arms slowly. The same sensitivity applies on short pitches. First open the clubface and move forward in your stance, then think soft, soft, soft: Take a soft grip, keep your arms soft and try to make as soft a sound as possible at impact. The anticipation of creating a quiet strike will keep you smooth.

Golf Tip of the Week

Trust Your Eyes

On the greens, a lot of golfers make the mistake of trying to figure out the correct length of their backstroke. I always ask them: If your throwing a ball to a person 2 feet away, would you think of the amount your arms have to move to reach me? What if that person were 40 feet away? The answer is always no. You make the stroke just like the throw. You base on what your eyes see and what the mind processes.

Golf Tip of the Week

Beat the Buried Lie

When you find your ball buried in the sand, you have to adjust your approach. Instead of trying to glide the club through the sand under the ball, you must explode it out with vigor. At address, close the clubface considerably and set your hands in front of the ball. Then pick the club up abruptly and bury the club into the sand behind the ball with a lot of force. This will cause the ball to pop out.

Golf Tip of the Week

Clip the Tee

When golfers deliberately hit down on the ball with their irons, it just doesn’t work. Instead, practice this drill from Harvey Penick: Push a tee almost all the way down into the ground, then set up with your 5-iron and practice clipping the top of the tee. You’ll learn to position the bottom of your swing arc right at the tee. Controlling the low point of the arc is the trick to making solid contact.

Golf Tip of the Week

Round It Out

Most amateurs swing down steeply with the driver, as if they were swinging an iron. Instead try a shallower path into the ball. Stand up and swing the driver around your body like a baseball bat. Once you ingrain the feeling, bend over at the waist and rest the club on the ground. Now hit shot continuing to feel the rounded motion.
